With a population second only to China and the second largest agricultural landbank - 157.35 million hectares, the Indian market remains still largely ignored by many foreign producers of agricultural technology and supplies. The scale of the Indian agriculture industry is enormous – it produces annually about 161 million tonnes of agricultural products, has 20 agri-climatic regions, which encompasses all 15 major climate zones as well as possesses 46 out of 60 main soil types that exist worldwide. About 58 per cent of India’s population depend on agriculture as a primary source of income. India is the worlds largest producer of spices, pulses, milk, tea, cashew and jute and the 2nd largest producer of wheat, rice, fruits and vegetables, sugarcane, cotton and oilseeds. It also ranks 2nd in global production of fruits and vegetables and is a leading exporter of mangoes and bananas.
