hann macdougallChris Hann, former Editor of the World's Poultry Science Journal, was awarded the Macdougall Medal by the Association during the closing ceremony of the XXI World's Poultry Congress in Montreal.
Making the presentation, the new President of the WPSA, Dr Peter Hunton, said: "I first met Chris at the beginning of the 1960s at one of the early British Poultry Breeders' Roundtables. At this time Chris was one of two genetics advisors on the staff of the UK Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food, helping breeders evolve into the mid-twentieth century breeding systems. Chris continued to work for the MAAF long after the genetics work ended, when all the breeders had either hired their own professional staff, merged with other breeders or left the business. He became deputy to a former WPSA officer, the late Dr Rupert Coles who was ten Head of the Poultry Division. When Dr Coles retired, Chris became Senior Poultry and Pig Advisor to the Minister until his own retirement in 1989. He was awarded the OBE for his government services.
Chris had been a long time member and loyal supporter of the WPSA, but when the then Editor of the World's Poultry Science Journal, Dr David Blaxland, died suddenly and quite unexpectedly, Chris stepped in when the Association was in dire need. His tenure as Editor continued from 1986 until 1998. Chris saw the journal through a series of evolutions which sometimes seemed to be revolutions. The budget crisis in the 1980s forced a change of publishers, with the journal essentially moving from a commercial publisher to a procedure in which most of the work had to be done in-house. And most of it was done in Chris's house. But, throughout this period, readers would have known little of the changes because Chris never sacrificed one molecule of the journal's professional content or appearance. He found excellent help where he needed it, and pleaded his cases with the WPSA's Executive Committee so that the journal maintained its presence and reputation online slots real for money. That his efforts were successful was demonstrated this year when Dr Simons was told by a representative of the publishers, Elsevier, that the World's Poultry Science Journal has a higher recognition factor in the international poultry science profession than Poultry Science.
Chris was also instrumental in restoring the journal to its original four times a year format. Again, he had to persuade a sometimes sceptical Executive Committee that this was the right way to go, and that the extra cost of production and mailing could be funded.
The whole Executive Committee felt that, taken in total, Chris's work as editor climbed well above the line of duty, and for this reason, it is my pleasure to present him with the highest award the WPSA can make, the Macdougall Medal".
