The presentation of an award in the form of a gold medal was instituted by the World's Poultry Science Association during the meeting of the XIIth World's Poultry Congress in Sydney, Australia in 1962. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge the meritorious service of a member of the Association. The Macdougall Award was named in honour of the long and faithful service of Major Ian Macdougall who was presented with the first Award during the Congress in Sydney. Since then there has been a total of nine distinguished recipients of the Medal. The tenth presentation was made at the opening ceremony of the Verona Conference to Dr P.C.M.Simons, General Secretary of the Association in recognition of his huge contribution to the work of WPSA particularly during the past 20 years.
Paying tribute to Dr Piet Simons, the Editor of the World's Poultry Science Journal, David Martin said 'I was privileged to meet Major Ian Macdougall when I first came into the poultry industry in 1961. I have also been fortunate to know most of the previous recipients of the distinguished medal award created in his memory. But I doubt if any of them deserved it more than Dr Piet Simons, who we are honouring here this evening'.
