AgroFood West Africa

ICE
  29 November 2022 - 01 December 2022

AICC – Grand Arena, Accra, Ghana

The fair agro AgroTech West Africa in Ghana from 29.11 – 01.12. 2022 is part of agrofood West Africa, a unique platform for the agrofood business. It is an excellent opportunity to meet the West African agro business community as well key decision-makers in Ghana.

In 2021, Ghana imported about $1.9 billion in agricultural and related products.

Ghana is strategically located and has over the years been marketed to the rest of the world as the gateway to Africa. With an estimated population of roughly 31 million, Ghana's market remains relatively advanced compared to others in Africa. Rapid urbanization and gains in economic growth continue to stimulate an emerging middle class who embrace Western brands, products, and lifestyles.

The domestic agricultural sector is composed of 80 percent crop production, 10 percent livestock, poultry and fishery production, and 10 percent forestry. The sector employs about approximately 45 percent of the population and contributes approximately 20 percent of GDP and accounts for over 30% of export earnings.

Ghana's main agricultural commodities include Cocoa (beans), yam, cassava, plantain, maize, groundnuts, cocoyam, rice, oil palm, tomatoes, pepper, oranges, onions, sorghum and pineapples. Production of food crops by smallholders has increased in recent years, but is still characterized by low productivity due to a number of factors such as poor extension services, aging farmers and lack of finance for investment in better inputs.

Your opportunities for example in:

Rice
Rice is cultivated in all the agricultural regions of Ghana. It is grown mainly in the valley bottoms, employing traditional farming practices. Modern scientific methods of rice cultivation through mechanization and irrigation are gradually increasing. Ghana has a total of 125,000 hectares of land under rice cultivation.

Oil Palm
Oil Palm is the most important edible oil crop in Ghana and in the whole West Africa region. Oil Palm and palm kernel oil represent 2% of total agricultural production value of Ghana. Ghana exported USD 71.3 million worth of oil palm in 2018. The total area under oil palm cultivation is 300,000 hectares.

Poultry
Poultry production in about 65 percent of the market is mainly 'free range' or 'backyard' – with a high chick mortality rate. Large quantities of poultry parts are imported into Ghana to satisfy local consumption. Own production is being driven forward.
