Constitution African Poultry Network (WPSA-APN)

The setting-up of the re-enforced constitution of the WPSA African Poultry Network

To facilitate the establishment of the African Poultry Network of the World’s Poultry Science Association (WPSA-APN), a workshop was held in Tours, France on the 21 of August 2010 during the European Poultry Conference (EPC). At this inception workshop, potential participants from the African continent together with various stakeholders or prospective partners were brought together to discuss the formation of the WPSA-APN. The following were discussed (i) aims, goals, structure, and modus operandi of the proposed APN, (ii) ways in which the Network will operate to assist in strengthening poultry education and training, and research capacity of the member countries on the African continent, (iii) overcoming the constraints to poultry production throughout the member countries in Africa, and (iv) the establishment of membership drives, and contacts between participants and future members of the WPSA-APN.

An interim committee was then appointed to be directly involved in the establishment of the Network. Several meetings have taken place since the establishment of the WPSA-APN but have not given rise to the desired impact of the WPSA-APN amongst the member countries. Individually, it must be acknowledged that some countries have made reasonable progress and aligned their activities to the objectives of the WPSA-APN. Its objectives were aligned to that of the unique mother body WPSA. The WPSA strives to advance knowledge and understanding of all aspect of poultry science and the poultry industry. The WPSA-APN’s major role was to encourage and support the facilitation, liaison among research scientists and educators; also, between those in research and education and those working in the poultry industry.

Unforeseen disasters such as the unfolding worldwide COVID-19 situation had an impact on the activities of the WPSA-APN. This was due not only to restrictions on various poultry production activities but also the uncertainty regarding travel, traditional meeting requirements and lockdowns/restrictions. This world health hazard proved challenging to most WPSA-APN branches to organise meetings. However, against all odds, various WPSA branches activated their poultry related activities with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. This also resulted in the French Branch of the WPSA and the organising committee of the 26th World’s Poultry Congress (WPC) at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, France, from 7 to 11 August 2022. During that WPC, a meeting of the WPSA-APN was held to stimulate interest and activate the WPSA-APN. Since then, there has been a series of communication between members of the WPSA-APN and the other participants who are interested in supporting the Network. These fruitful interactions and brainstorming sessions amongst the members, partners and stakeholders of the WPSA-APN have led to the re-enforcement and alignment of the constitution of the WPSA-APN to that of other networks and WPSA. This WPSA-APN constitution was approved by the WPSA Board on 16 December 2022, which will enable the WPSA-APN to be more effective and efficient in all its operations. A steering committee headed by Dr E. Fallou Guèye, an advisory committee and honorary champions have been set up to steer the affairs of the WPSA-APN.
