WPSA Membership Newsletter
Volume 1, May 2007

Welcome to the first edition of the WPSA Membership Newsletter. The Board of the “World’s Poultry Science Association” met on March 7, 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand, to discuss the business of the Association and its programmes. One item of discussion was how to improve communication with the Association’s individual members, and this e-mail newsletter is an outcome of that discussion. WPSA communicates with its members through its routinely updated website (www.wpsa.com), and through the Association’s News and Calendar sections of the World’s Poultry Science Journal (WPSJ). Nevertheless, it was thought that direct e-mails to individual members might increase the membership’s knowledge of the Association and its activities. Routine updates about WPSA activities should arrive in your e-mail four times a year, roughly in between the four issues of the WPSJ.

Reports, Discussions and Actions of the WPSA Board Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand, March, 2007

Report of the President: President Dr. Rüveyde Akbay spent most of her efforts over the past eight months on strengthening friendships and building relationships for the Association. She attended the European Poultry Congress in Verona where she helped lead the opening ceremony and had the honour of presenting the McDougal Medal for Outstanding Service over the past 25 years to the World’s Poultry Science Association to the Association’s Secretary Piet Simons. She also co-chaired the first plenary session of the EPC with Dr. Dietmar Flock, the then Chair of the European Federation of WPSA. Following the European Congress, she also represented the Association at the 7th Ukrainian International Poultry Conference in Alushta, Crimea, Ukraine; the 14th Baltic Poultry Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania; the New Zealand Poultry Industry Conference in Palmerston-North, New Zealand; U.S. Poultry and Egg Association’s International Poultry Exposition, in Atlanta, Georgia; the International Symposium on Influenza, Istanbul, Turkey; the 5th International Poultry Show & Seminar, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and the 8th Asian Pacific Poultry Conference that was held in Bangkok, Thailand in early March of this year. Numerous discussions were held during her travels with the leadership of the WPSA Branches she visited, as well as with individuals or groups who are interested in the possibility of developing new branches of WPSA in their countries.

Report of the Secretary: Dr. Piet Simons reported that the number of WPSA Branches was at 73 on January 1, 2007. He is hoping to have 80 Branches by the end of 2008. Membership in WPSA has increased from 6,843 in 2005 to 7,358 in March, 2007.

The WPSA Speakers Bureau provided speakers for six Conferences worldwide during 2005, and for three conferences during 2006. During 2005, those speakers included Dr. R.W.A.W. Mulder, the Netherlands, - the International Poultry Conference in Santiago, Chile, and the International Poultry Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka; Prof.Dr. E. Decuypere, Belgium - the 3rd World’s Waterfowl Conference, Guangzhou, P.R.C.; Prof. H. Pingel, Germany - the 2nd Waterfowl Workshop, Bogor, Indonesia; Dr. Anagbesan, Belgium and Dr. Trefil, Czech Republic - the International Poultry Conference in Lagos, Nigeria; Prof. G. Mead, United Kingdom - the AM Conference and at the WPSA Seminar in Malaysia; and Dr. Gaylene Fasenko, Canada - Poultry Seminar in Bogota, Columbia. For 2006, speakers included: Ir. P.L.M. van Horne, The Netherlands - International Poultry Conference, Teheran, Iran; Dr. J.C.M. Dekkers, Iowa State University, USA - Poultry Conference in Croatia; and Dr. R.W.A.W. Mulder, The Netherlands - International Poultry Conference, Sri Lanka.

Eighteen travel grants were approved by the WPSA Executive Committee during 2006, and 14 were actually utilized to support the travel of young scientists to meetings. Two individuals could not obtain a visa, 1 cancelled, and 1 decided not to attend. All of the travel grants were to the European Poultry Congress, and the recipients were from Chile (1), Egypt (2), India (5), Iran (4), Pakistan (2) and Sri Lanka (2).

Dr. Simons represented the Association at the following meetings during 2006: USA (Atlanta, U.S. Poultry & Egg Exposition, and the Southern Poultry Science Meetings); Chile (International Poultry Conference), Canada (Poultry Science Annual Meetings) Finland (Cost Meeting), the United Kingdom (CUP Meeting), Italy (European Poultry Congress), Poland (International Poultry Conference), and China (VIV Asia).

Report of the Treasurer Dr. Francine Bradley, WPSA Treasurer, reported that the Association is a very financially sound organization in which the leadership has the reserves to fund all of the programmes that support its Missions of Education, Organization and Research related to Poultry Science. Income for calendar year 2006 was up in most categories. The Association’s net worth increased considerably during 2006, mostly from unrealized gains on the Association’s investment portfolio. A committee suggested by the WPSA Executive Committee and approved by the Board reviews the Association’s books annually. Due to the early date of the 2007 Board Meeting, only the Review of the 2005 books was available. The Committee found the books to be appropriately maintained, easy to access, and complete. The 2006 books will be reviewed this summer. A detailed financial report for the Association is available to any member upon request.

XXII World’s Poultry Congress, Brisbane, Australia: Dr. Bob Pym, WPC 2008 Chair reported that preparations for the 2008 World’s Poultry Congress (www.WPC2008.com) are progressing on schedule. The Congress will run from Sunday 29 June to the afternoon of Friday 4 July. The Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception will be held on the afternoon/evening of Monday 30 June and the Congress dinner will be held on the evening of Thursday 3 July.

Plans for the scientific and technical programme are well underway, and abstracts are currently being accepted (see below). The programme s being organized under the following general themes: Welfare, Husbandry and the Environment; Nutrition and Feed Technologies; Bird Health and Disease; Processing and Product Safety; Economics and Marketing; Education and Extension; Genetics and Breeding; Physiology and Reproduction; Egg Processing and Egg Products; Alternative Management Systems (including family poultry farming); and Other Species. Plenary sessions with keynote speakers will be held each morning, to morning tea, followed by concurrent symposia and poster sessions.

Abstracts will be received from January 2007 to September 2007 via the WPC2008 Congress website. These will be reviewed by the scientific and technical programme committee to determine the session for presentation. Information on abstract submission is provided on the above website.

To maximize participation of delegates from Australia and the Asian Pacific region, and to maximize sponsorship and exhibitors, the triennial Australian Poultry Convention and the annual Australian Poultry Science Symposium, have been subsumed into WPC2008. Additionally, three concurrent meetings have been included under the umbrella of WPC2008. These include the 6th Asian Pacific Poultry Health Conference, the 4th International Ratite Science Symposium, and the 2008 Australian Poultry Information Exchange (PIX, an Australian biennial producer-focused meeting) which will run concurrently with the Congress. All of these meetings will be closely integrated within the Congress programme. Inclusion of PIX under the umbrella of WPC2008 was seen as a very important factor in avoiding dilution of regional delegate attendance, sponsorship and exhibitors. The Congress programme has been closely integrated with these affiliations, with AP6 primarily covering the Bird Health and Disease stream. Additional to this, satellite meetings include: the 10th Avian Immunology Research Group’s Meeting to be held from 26 to 29 of June immediately before the Congress; and the 8th International Marek’s Disease Symposium to be held in Townsville from 6 to 10 of July, immediately following the Congress.

World’s Poultry Science Journal (WPSJ)

The World’s Poultry Science Journal has been available to institutional subscribers on-line for the past several years. As a result of the change in our publishing partners, the on-line edition has become available from Cambridge University Press (CUP) instead of CABI. The WPSJ has been published electronically and marketed by CABI from 2004 until July 1, 2006 when it was acquired by Cambridge University Press. Transfer of the WPSJ to Cambridge Journals On-Line took place on January 1, 2007. Cambridge Journals Online (CJO) was one of the first publishers to develop its own electronic platform back in 1997. The latest generation of CJO was launched in August 2005, and has been widely praised as being equal to the best sites in the business.

Through the work of a sub-committee of the Board appointed by President Akbay, members now have the option of receiving the World’s Poultry Science Journal on-line, instead of the print edition. The print version will continue to be the normal method of receiving the Journal. If you wish to receive the on-line version instead of the printed version, you must indicate that you want the on-line version by completing the form on the website www.wpsa.com. The CUP system has been upgraded to permit reference searches, tracing of citations, etc. Members should have received a communication from WPSA requesting that they make this choice.

The following Items have been agreed upon concerning the On-Line version of WPSJ for Members between the WPSA Board’s Committee and Cambridge University Press (CUP)

  • CUP will make the on-line version available to members on a password basis once member details are provided to them via the WPSA Office (see above for signing up).
  • Translations of abstracts, as is currently done for WPSJ, will be included in the on-line version
  • There is no extra charge for this service
  • Members will have the choice of receiving the Journal on-line OR as the current printed copy
  • Default will continue to be the printed or hard copy of the WPSJ
  • Advertising will not be included in the on-line version, but a new page on the WPSA website will highlight gold and silver sponsors with direct links to their own websites.

The Secretary’s Office is endeavouring to obtain the e-mail addresses of individual members. Members must provide their current e-mail addresses to WPSA in order to take advantage of this Newsletter and/or the new on-line version of the journal. Please remind your fellow members that they must go to the WPSA website (www.wpsa.com) to sign up for the Newsletter and/or the on-line version of the journal.

Volume 62 (2006) of the World’s Poultry Science Journal was published on schedule with a total of 764 pages (Vol. 61, 753 pages). The contents of Volume 62 included 34 main review papers and 5 regional reports. Volume 63, No. 1 (March, 2007) has also been published on schedule, and it included 9 review articles plus a 20 page special edition on “Small-scale Family Poultry Production.’ The latter is a cooperative project between WPSA and FAO’s International Network for Family Poultry Development (INFPD), and it will be published twice each year in the March and September editions. The average time from submission to acceptance of papers in WPSJ is just under 4 months.

WPSJ Archives: The current on-line journal subscription for institutions includes free access to the Archive back to volume 60 (2004). Transfer of the Archive from Ingenta to the CUP Platform is in its final stages and when complete will comprise volumes 1-59 (1945-2003) This Archive is currently available as a perpetual sale for a one-time fee of US$995, plus an annual maintenance fee for non-subscribers. There will be a considerably lower, subscription rate to current subscribers only.

The WPSA Office is Seeking Access to the International Review of Poultry Science, All Volumes 1928 – 1940 (predecessor to the World’s Poultry Science Journal)

In 1928, in order to improve the way in which it achieved one of its primary objectives – the dissemination of knowledge – the organization now known as the World’s Poultry Science Association (then known as the International Association of Poultry Instructors) began publication of its own journal. That journal was named the International Review of Poultry Science (IRPS), and it was published biannually in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Thirteen volumes of the IRPS were published from 1928 to 1940. The editors were Dr. B.J.C. te Hennepe (The Netherlands) and Dr. Gustave Heuser (USA). Publication of the IRPS was suspended during World War II, but was resumed in the spring of 1945 under the current name, the World’s Poultry Science Journal.

Unfortunately, the WPSA office in Beekbergen has only one edition of the IRPS (i.e., Tome 5, no 3/4, 1933). The Association is, therefore, asking individual members to search their personal and/or university libraries to see if they locate copies of this these journal, and if found, to find out whether or not they could either be donated to WPSA or loaned for electronic copying. If all or some of the copies can be found, especially for copying, then the International Review of Poultry Science will be added to the WPSJ Archives. If you or someone you know can make these journals available to the Association, please contact Dr. Piet Simons, WPSA, PO Box 31, 7360 AA Beekbergen, The Netherlands, E-mail wpsa@xs4all.nl.
