President’s Report

President, Bob Pym
President, Bob Pym

Establishment of WPSA branches in Africa: Prior to attending the WPSA Board meeting in Turkey on 30 October, I visited a number of southern and eastern African Countries in relation to the establishment of WPSA branches and the development of the African Poultry Network. The development and viability of the Network is likely to be crucially dependent upon the establishment of active WPSA branches throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The branch in South Africa is well established and very active, and it was my pleasure, on invitation, to attend their Scientific Day on 6 October 2011; it was an excellent programme.

Following that, I visited in turn Mozambique, Kenya and Ethiopia. Mozambique does not have a WPSA branch, but I was able to discuss the possibilities and benefits of same with persons active in promoting poultry production in the country from government, from NGOs (TechnoServe and the Kyeema Foundation) and representatives from the local poultry producers association in Maputo. There was considerable interest in developing an application for membership and discussions are ongoing. My visit to Kenya was organised by Dr Thomas Kaudia, Chair of the African Poultry Network Steering Committee and principal player in the development of the current Kenyan application for membership of WPSA. While there I met in Nairobi with a number of senior government personnel and academics associated with livestock production and veterinary services, who all expressed strong support for Kenya’s application for membership. In Ethiopia, I attended a meeting in Addis Ababa kindly organised by FAO for the specific purpose of discussing the development of a WPSA branch in the country. Attendees at the meeting included poultry producers, feed millers, government personnel and representatives from FAO. There was strong endorsement of the proposal to form a branch and this process is presently underway under the enthusiastic direction of Mr. Milkias Kelemework from Three Lakes Poultry Farm, Debrezeit. While there I travelled to Ethiopia’s main Agricultural and Veterinary University at Jimma, where I had discussions with a number of poultry researchers and academics who expressed keen interest in being involved in the development of the proposed branch.

Collaboration with the World’s Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA): Over the past four or more years, there has been ongoing dialogue between WPSA and WVPA about bringing the Associations closer together. It was thought by some that there would be considerable merit in organising joint meetings, even joint world congresses. A particular benefit of this would be the opportunity to run multidisciplinary sessions focused on multifactorial problems.
One of the particular constraints to combining the world congresses of the two organisations is the inherent structure within each organisation associated with the determination of the country and venue of forthcoming meetings. In WPSA, a very significant section of the Constitution and By-laws deal with the processes associated with the selection and election of the host country of forthcoming Congresses.
Issues relating to poultry health are not the exclusive province of WVPA. Most health issues and problems are multi-factorial and WPSA historically has demonstrated a keen interest and involvement in promoting discussion of these problems. The involvement of poultry health professionals is, of course, fundamental to this. In many developing countries, the issue which stimulates producers and others to seek assistance and advice is frequently related to bird health problems. This collective action often results in the formation of a branch of either WVPA or WPSA in the country. This argues for close collaboration and cooperation between the two Associations.
In northern Africa, WVPA is relatively well represented in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, whereas apart from Egypt and Algeria, WPSA is not. One of the aims of establishing the Mediterranean Poultry Network within WPSA, was to facilitate the development of WPSA branches in that region through collaboration with WVPA. This has been somewhat interrupted by recent developments there with the “Arab Spring” uprisings.
There are other ways in which the two organisations can interact and collaborate and I look forward to discussions with my good friend and colleague, Dr Trevor Bagust, the recently elected President of WVPA, to explore opportunities for a closer relationship between the two organisations.

Report from the Office of the Secretary General

General Secretary, Roel Mulder
Secretary General, Roel Mulder

Board meeting: During the recent Board meeting, held in conjunction with the European Poultry Nutrition Symposium, 30 October 2011 in Cesme, Turkey, the programme for the next World Poultry Science Congress and plans for the celebration of 100 years WPSA in 2012 were discussed. Information can be found on www.wpc2012.com.

During the 2012 Council meeting to be held during the World Poultry Congress on 7 August 2012 in Salvador, Brazil, a number of major decisions will be made including: the site for the 2020 World’s Poultry Congress; the election of officers for the WPSA Board; and the selection of new members for the Poultry Hall of Fame. Branch secretaries have been informed on the procedures and deadline for nominations for the Hall of Fame. More information is available through roel.mulder@wpsa.com.

Branches: The inaugural meeting of the branch in Azerbaijan has been postponed until 9-11 January 2012.

Travel grants 2011: During 2011 a total of 27 WPSA Travel Grants were accepted for travel to the following Symposia and conferences: the Australian Poultry Science Symposium in Sydney, Australia; the Asian Pacific Poultry Conference in Taipei, Taiwan: the Journees Avicoles in Tours, France; the 2011 Poultry Science Association meeting, in St Louis, Missouri, USA; the 30th Poultry Science Symposium in Glasgow, Scotland; the European Symposia on the Quality of Poultry Meat, Eggs and Egg Products in Leipzig, Germany; and the European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition, in Cesme, Turkey.

Promotion of WPSA: WPSA was promoted at many symposia and conferences, including a number of symposia organised by the various Working Groups of the European Federation (Incubation, Physiology, Quality of Meat and Eggs, Nutrition), and the Latin American Poultry Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina in September. This resulted in greater visibility for WPSA, additional members, and in the development of new contacts with companies who may become sponsors and WPSJ advertisers.

In 2012, WPSA will be present at a number of large poultry exhibitions around the world including: Victam Asia, Bangkok, Thailand; VIV China, Beijing, China and Eurotier, Hannover, Germany. WPSA will promote the association and its main activities, such as the 2012 World’s Poultry Congress in Salvador, Brazil. During these exhibitions and scientific meetings, WPSA promotional materials, including copies of the WPS Journal, are made available. To avoid high postage costs for sending printed materials, a special CD was produced with all of the information about WPSA and the WPS Journal.

WPSA materials will also be distributed at other large events such as the “Cereal’s Mixed feed-Veterinary” Fair in Moscow, Russia (7-10 February 2012); the 3rd Mediterranean Poultry Summit in Alexandria, Egypt (25-28 March 2012); and the AGRA Middle East in Dubai, UAE, (2-4 April 2012). On 4 April there will be a one-day Poultry Summit during the Dubai Fair.

100 years WPSA: A historical stamp exhibition will be prepared for the 2012 World’s Poultry Congress. The Belgian based organisation Les Amis de la Mere Poule, is responsible for organizing this. Secretaries of branches who organised WPCs in the past and who could find philatelic material produced during these events have been contacted in order to obtain as much material as possible. Any member who has philatelic material available, should contact Mrs Maria Spitaels, Les Amis de la Mère Poule, Jan de Trochstraat 118, 1703 Schepdaal, BELGIUM, Maria.spitaels@pandora.be. In the meantime the Belgian organisation has started a promotional campaign with individual First Day Covers, showing the logo’s of each of the 24 WPCs together with the WPSA logo and the 100 year logo. An example is shown below. Sets of First Day Covers can be bought. Please contact Mrs. Maria Spitaels.

Report from the Office of the Treasurer

General Secretary, Roel Mulder
Treasurer,
Francine Bradley

This September, the Association’s Review of the Books Committee (Dr. Yvonne Vizzier-Thaxton and Dr. Ralph Ernst) went over the 2010 records and financial statement. The reviewers wrote President Bob Pym that they found all records to be in good order.

At the October WPSA Board Meeting held in Cesme, Turkey, I presented the finalized financial reports for 2010. I also fielded questions on our finances and reviewed how records (2008-2011) would be presented at next year’s Congress.

Since my return from Turkey, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has completed an audit of WPSA’s tax returns for 2008. The audit was initiated by the IRS in April. During April and early May, I spent weeks assembling all the documentation I was to have available for the audit. This documentation included the ORIGINAL 1955 letter written by Dr. Gustav Heuser and co-signed by Dr. Rupert Coles and Major MacDougall to the IRS, requesting tax-exempt status for WPSA. In mid-May the IRS Auditor spent 2 full days in my WPSA office interviewing me, going over all the records, and posing questions. When he departed, he said everything was in order. However, he was unsure if we needed to fill out forms on the satellite accounts WPSA maintains in The Netherlands.
In late July, I was notified that WPSA should fill out Foreign Bank and Financial Account forms (FBARs) on any foreign account containing in excess of US$10,000. We were required to go back and complete FBARs for 2005, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
On Oct. 21, 2011 the IRS Director of EO Examinations wrote me that WPSA’s 2008 tax returns were accepted as filed and that WPSA continues to qualify for exemption from Federal Income Tax. This is significant for WPSA and I hope we can look forward to many audit-free years!

European Federation of WPSA

The European Federation has planned a number of conferences between now and the the end of 2013. The conferences are listed at the end of this Newsletter and contact information is available on the WPSA website (www.wpsa.com). News from a number of the Federation’s working groups are provided below.

WPSA European Working Group News

WG1: The European Federation’s Working Group 1 on Poultry Economics and Marketing held its 3rd round-table on Poultry Economics and Marketing on 27-28 October, 2011, in Barcelona, Spain.
For information on future activities contact the chairman of WG1 Peter van Horne at peter.vanhorne@wur.nl.

WG2: The European Federation’s Working Group 2 co-hosted the 18th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (ESPN’2011) with the Turkish Branch of WPSA on 31 October – 4 November, 2011 at the Sheraton Resort Hotel, Çeşme, İzmir, Turkey.

WG3: The European Federation’s Working Group 3 on Breeding and Genetics hosted the 7th European Symposium on Poultry Genetics on 5-7 October 2011 at the Peebles Hydro, Scottish Borders. The Symposium included 88 registrants from 19 countries, and the venue was very nice and convenient. Participants by country included: The United Kingdom (31), Germany (11), USA (7), France and Netherlands (6 each), Italy (5), and the Czech Republic (4). Twelve other countries had 1 or 2 participants, including: Australia (1), China (1), Nigeria (1), and Ghana (2). Twenty-two of the participants were from breeding companies or breeding associations (including AVEC, NGO representing the poultry sector in Brussels). The other 66 participants were academics. Just prior to the symposium, Aviagen had organised an internal workshop with foreign scientific experts. Paul Hocking made a presentation about the European Federation and its working groups.

Michele Tixier-Boichard made a short presentation about the activities of the worldwide WPSA at the business meeting of WG3. She included information on branch development, the WPSA travel fund, the WPSA Speaker’s Bureau, the digital library, WPC2012, and the WPSA Centennial celebration that will be held at the World Congress in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil during August, 2012. The business meeting was mainly devoted to the preparation of the programme for the next symposium that will take place in Padova, Italy, around Sept 25, 2013.

Six scientific sessions were held at the 7th Symposium, including:

  1. Genomic selection: 2 theoretical papers, and 1 presentation by the Lohmann company
  2. Genetics of behaviour: one quantitative genetics paper on selection with social effects; one review on the corticotropic axis, and on the physiology of stress; one talk on the biology of adaptation in wild birds (unusual for WPSA where you discover that broilers would walk more easily if they had uncinate processes); one talk on Broiler welfare and regulatory issues where Paul Hocking presented the outcome of an expert panel. There are clearly different perceptions of this issue in WG9 and WG3 and it would be of interest to trigger a scientific discussion between these two groups at either the EPC or at the next WPC. The Cobb and Aviagen breeding companies presented how welfare issues (locomotion problems, pododermatitis) can be included in a selection programme, and they concluded that there is no welfare problem that selection could not solve. The relationship between scientific expertise and lobbying could sometimes be a delicate issue.
  3. Genetic resistance to diseases: one talk presented biotechnological approaches of fighting avian flu, and another one showed how new vaccines against coccidia were elaborated. These two talks did not really address the genetics of the chicken, but rather the genetics of the pathogen; the last talk provided an extensive review on the genetics of resistance to salmonella infection and the carrier state.
  4. Biodiversity: one talk on linkage disequilibrium in commercial and experimental brown or white-egg layers (very similar to a published paper); one talk on chicken domestication with a proposal of a domestication centre in Indonesia; one report from a European project on Low Input Breeds, with a comparison of free-range and organic farming in three countries (F, NL, CH) and a discussion of sustainability/adaptability.
  5. Next generation sequencing: a review on what genome sequencing makes possible (phylogenomics, high density SNP chips for selection, genome expression, methylome) ; an example of the search for selection signatures in the High and Low growth rate lines of P. Siegel (now studied in Sweden) ; a conclusion on what technology offers in terms of ‘precision animal breeding’ and ‘genetic epidemiology’.
  6. Several posters were presented orally with a few minutes each, some quite interesting, others were more classical.

Altogether this was a very pleasant and interesting meeting with lots of time for discussion.

Michèle Tixier-Boichard

WG5: The WG5 meeting was held in Leipzig (Germany) during the Eggmeat 2011 meeting (August, 4-8, 2011). The meetings were held at the Congress Centre in Leipzig.

The XXI European Symposium on the Quality of Poultry Meat organized by the European Federation’s Working Group 5 will take place in parallel with Working Group 4’s XV European Symposium on the Quality of Eggs and Egg Products. Both will be held on September 15-19, 2013 in Bergamo, Italy.

Michel Duclos

WG6: The next meeting of the Incubation and Fertility Research Group (IFRG) will be held in Pisa, Italy, on June 13-15, 2012. The Chairman of the Meeting is Dr. Nick French (Aviagen). Dr. Margherita Marzoni and Dr. Annelisse Castillo (Pisa University) are in charge of the Local Organizing Committee. Further details and information is available on the following websites: http://www.ifrg.org/ifrg.htm and http://www.msn.unipi.it/default.aspx.

WG9: The European Federations Working Group 9 on Poultry Welfare and Management currently consists of 36 members from 24 countries. The group will meet at Uppsala, Sweden 30-31 January 2012. The main agenda item for discussion will be the organization of programme details for the 9th European Symposium on Poultry Welfare that will be held in Uppsala, Sweden 17-20 June 2013 – see www-conference.slu.se/poultrywelfare2013.

Asian Pacific Federation

WPSA Asian Pacific Working Group News

WG3: The Asian Pacific Federation’s Working Group 3 involves researchers working on “Ratites” (emus, ostriches, rheas, cassowaries and kiwis).

On 11-14 July 2011, a one-day Ratite Scientific Symposium was held at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) during the 44th Bi-annual meeting of the South African Society of Animal Science. The Ratite Group, plans to attend the 24th World Poultry Congresses 2012 in Brazil and the 10th Asia Pacific Federation Conference in South Korea. Speakers' Bureau: Fostering local and regional conferences in the poultry sciences

During the 34th meeting of the Board of WPSA on August 20, 2000 in Montreal, Canada it was recognised that expertise in several areas of poultry science and production in low income countries is often very limited, and WPSA branches in these countries often do not have sufficient financial resources to fund overseas speakers.
To address this problem, the Board created a Speakers’ Bureau to assist branches in low income countries to cover the travel costs of expert international speakers. This measure is consistent with the key objective of WPSA to encourage and facilitate liaison among research scientists and educators, between those in research and education and those working in the many diverse sectors of the poultry industry. Under the Speakers’ Bureau scheme, WPSA will pay only the cost of air travel (lowest economy class). All other expenses such as local travel and accommodation are to be paid by the organizing Branch(es). WPSA will not pay any honorarium to speakers.
A Branch (or group of Branches) may either identify a speaker to invite or seek the advice of WPSA in the selection of an appropriate speaker.
Given the high cost of international air travel it is important that optimum value be obtained from this expenditure by WPSA. This can be achieved by insisting that the visiting speaker provides more than just one paper at a conference. The visiting speaker could contribute in a variety of ways, e.g., present a second paper on a related topic, conduct a workshop for graduate students, have small group or one-on-one interaction, especially with students, visit industry groups, visit university groups, etc.

Where a Branch or a group of Branches wish to apply for Speakers’ Bureau assistance, there are certain conditions which must be met:

DSM grants Nutrition Award 2011 to Dr. Yves Nys

Yves Nys
Dr. Yves Nys

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, recently announced that the DSM Nutrition Award 2011 for research on Animal Nutrition has been granted to Dr. Yves Nys of INRA, the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research in the field of poultry nutrition. In the course of a career spanning several decades, Dr. Nys has pushed the frontiers of poultry nutrition science to develop several novel approaches to enhancing the quality of poultry products, such as poultry meat and eggs, which are a major source of relatively cheap and nutritious animal derived proteins.

An international judging committee, chaired by Dr. Georg Kau, Vice President Research & Development at DSM Nutritional Products, unanimously selected Dr. Nys from among several candidates shortlisted by an international pre-selection committee. The award – which carries a cash prize of €50,000 – was presented to Dr. Nys in the presence of a large audience at the 18th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition 2011 in Cesme (Izmir), Turkey, on 2 November.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kau said: “With our Nutrition Award, we want to recognize and reward exceptional contributions to the advancement of science in the fields of human and animal nutrition. As a science-based company and leading producer of products in the field of animal nutrition & health, we are convinced that scientific research will always play a crucial role in providing innovative solutions to the many challenges we face today, such as ensuring food and nutrition security for the world’s rapidly growing population. We are very pleased to honour here today one of the world’s most outstanding scientists working in the field of poultry nutrition.”

According to the judging committee, Dr. Nys has made a major contribution to the world’s understanding of the role of nutrition in improving the quality of poultry products: “His research has resulted in an impressive record of scientific publications, almost all dedicated to poultry nutrition and physiology at a very deep experimental and analytical level. His publications – positioned at the interface of nutrition, physiology and molecular biology – have provided new insights into the mineral metabolism of poultry and egg quality.

Major name in poultry nutrition research

Dr. Yves Nys studied general agronomy and received his PhD in animal nutrition from University Paris 6. With the exception of several research assignments at various European and Canadian universities, he has spent most of his working life at the Tours (France) branch of INRA, a unique institution entirely dedicated to poultry research, of which Dr. Nys was a director from 2002 to 2007. He is currently Director of Research at INRA. A physiologist and nutritionist, Dr. Nys specializes in the study of the poultry egg in terms of its formation, structure and quality as well as its natural defences. In the course of several decades of research activity, he has also addressed topics such as the mineral metabolism of poultry, the fabric of the eggshell, the nutrition and physiology of laying hens, the assessment of feedstuffs for their specific utility in birds’ feeding, and the development of sustainable ways of poultry production with a lower impact on the environment. Dr. Nys has a broad network of scientific collaborations across the world and has (co-)organized scientific conferences, most recently the European Poultry Conference in Tours (France) in 2010, of which he was chairman. Dr. Nys enjoys a very high reputation among peers and his scientific publications.

The Chilean branch held its 7th Technical Annual Meeting on September 2, 2011. The one day Symposium was held at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Chile in Santiago.
Dr Eddy Decuypere from the Catholic University at Leuven in Belgium, gave two presentations to a full auditorium: the first talk was on A physiological point of view for broilers selected for rapid growth and feed efficiency; and the second talk was on the Basics of thermoregulation and physiological responses of poultry upon climate stress. Those two talks provided the Chilean producerswith some concepts and tools for controlling the cost of production, in times of high feed cost, when the producer is obligated to minimize energy expenditure.
Another interesting topic was presented on: Manure Management in Avian Productive Systems by Ing. Catherine Prain from the Sopraval Company in Chile. The Technical Symposium was completed with another interesting talk on Nutritionally Critical Points of Laying Hens by Dr Douglas Zaviezo from the Special Nutrients Company in the USA.

South Africa

The South African Branch’s 30th annual WPSA Scientific Day was held in Pretoria on 6 October 2011. Our main guest speaker was Dr Vicky Sandilands from the Scottish Agricultural College in Scotland. In her first paper, on feeding behaviour in domestic fowl, she discussed the implications of the processes of domestication and improvements in feeding methods on poultry feeding behaviour. Birds no longer have to spend as long in foraging (appetitive behaviour) to eat their daily requirement (consummatory behaviour). However, domestic fowl still have both the ability and the motivation to perform all phases of feeding. If appetitive feeding behaviour is prevented, then birds may develop abnormal behaviours such as stereotypic oral behaviours (as with broiler breeders) or feather pecking behaviour (as with laying hens). Improvements in housing methods that extend the appetitive phase of feeding may improve bird welfare.
Her second paper concerned the consequences of selection on poultry behaviour and welfare. She noted that artificial selection has been very effective at giving us two distinct lines of chickens: those that produce meat and those that produce eggs. In comparison to their wild jungle fowl ancestors, modern chickens may appear to behave very differently to their shy, lightweight counterparts. But modern birds have retained many of their natural behaviours, including the motivation to perch (which may have implications for bone damage), broodiness and the motivation to find/make a nest. Selection has resulted in birds with large appetites and increased egg output, which (although beneficial to humans) can have detrimental effects on the birds. Also, the way in which we house birds (for example, caged hens without access to dust bathing substrates) can have detrimental effects on their welfare. Alternative selection methods or ways of managing poultry should be considered to ensure that they have a good quality of life.
Another paper on genetic selection was presented by Dr Nicky Tyler from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, who provided evidence that it is possible to select against photorefractoriness in broiler breeders.
Dr Tom Shryock of Elanco, Dr Karin Naehrer of Biomin, Dr David Bravo of Pancosma and Dr Peter Plumstead of Danisco discussed the benefits derived from the use of antimicrobials, fumonisins, phytonutrients and enzyme applications, as well as their modes of action.
Two presentations looked into the future of the poultry industry in South Africa. The first, by Dr Ferdi Meyer of the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy, discussed the future availability of feed ingredients for poultry, and in the second, the Chairman of the South African Poultry Association, Kevin Lovell, gave evidence to suggest that there is tremendous potential for increasing poultry production and consumption in Africa.
We were fortunate this year to have the President of the WPSA, Dr Bob Pym, to open the meeting, which has become one of the most important scientific meetings in South Africa for the poultry community.

Turkey

The Turkish branch was privileged to host the 18th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition between 31 October – 4 November 2011, in Çeşme, Izmir. The support of the Working Group 2 of the European Federation under the presidency of Dr. Sanna Steenfeldt was vital in realising this important event. This symposium was very rewarding for our branch members, and I’m sure for most of the other participants as well. A record number of 878 individuals from 56 countries took part in the symposium.

One of the highlights of the symposium was that our WPSA board member and the President of the European Federation, Dr. Yves Nys, was awarded the prestigious DSM Nutrition Award for 2011.

During the symposium, several important board meetings were held, including:

The Turkish branch will organise a national poultry symposium in cooperation with the Aegean University in September 2012.
