President’s Report

President, Bob Pym
President, Bob Pym

It is very pleasing indeed to see the number of new branches of WPSA that have been formed since the last World’s Poultry Congress in Brisbane in 2008. This includes Tanzania (2008), Algeria and Cameroon (2009), and Burundi, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Senegal (2010). Branches presently in the process of being formed are Azerbaijan, Guinea-Conakry and Kenya.

It is also particularly pleasing to see the involvement of all sectors of the industry (representing research, education, government bodies and commercial companies) in the executive and general membership of many of these branches. Such broad based involvement is crucial to the ongoing relevance of the branch in the development of the poultry industry in the country.

Whilst not a new branch, I was particularly impressed by the high level of Government interest and involvement in the staging of the 7th International Poultry Show and seminar in Dhaka, Bangladesh in March of this year (organised by the WPSA Bangladesh branch), where a number of senior Government ministers spoke at length at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the meeting.

This suggests that in many developing countries, there is the potential for WPSA to play a high profile role in concert with Government and the commercial industry in addressing problems and facilitating the development of a viable and efficient poultry industry. The challenge to all branches is to maintain that diversity of membership and degree of involvement in all aspects of poultry production.

I have reported previously on the formation of the African Poultry Network (APN) and have a final opportunity as WPSA President and as convener of the APN Steering Committee, to visit Southern and Eastern Africa in October. The purpose of the visit is to meet with members of the APN Management Committee in South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya and Ethiopia en route to the WPSA Board meeting in Turkey in late October. I am keen to see the development of regional meetings throughout Africa wherein the activities of the APN can be facilitated and promoted. Such a meeting will be held in conjunction with the WPSA South African Branch’s Scientific Day in Pretoria on 6-7 October 2011.

My very best wishes are sent to all WPSA members. I look forward to seeing at least some of you at the European Federation (EF) Meat and Egg Quality Symposium in Leipzig (September), the UK branch Alternative Production Systems Symposium in Glasgow (September), the EF Nutrition Symposium in Cesme, Turkey (November), the Australian Poultry Science Symposium in Sydney (February 2012) and at the Mediterranean Poultry Summit in Alexandria, Egypt in March 2012. I hope as many of you as possible can attend the 24th World’s Poultry Congress in Salvador Brazil in August next year. It looks like being an excellent meeting; one not to be missed!

Report from the Office of the Secretary General

General Secretary, Roel Mulder
General Secretary, Roel Mulder

Branches: The inaugural meeting of the newly formed branch in Azerbaijan has been planned for the end of September 2011.

Speakers Bureau: The following requests for conference speakers from the WPSA Speakers Bureau have been accepted: WPSA Mexico (Dr. R. Cepero Briz, Spain); WPSA Chile (Prof E. Decuijpere, Belgium); and, WPSA South Africa (Dr Vicky Sandilands, UK).

Travel grants 2011: As of the end of August, 20 WPSA Travel Grants have been accepted. One was for attending the Australian Poultry Science Symposium in Sydney. Seven were accepted for travel to the Asian Pacific Poultry Conference that was held in March in Taipei, Taiwan; one was accepted for travel to the Journees Avicoles in Tours, and France; 2 were accepted for attending the 2011 Poultry Science Association meeting, in St Louis, Missouri, USA, and 2 were accepted for attending the 30th Poultry Science Symposium in Glasgow, Scotland.. A total of 7 additional travel grants were accepted for travel to several other symposia that were sponsored by the European Federation.

Constitution and By-laws: The new constitution and by-laws were published in the WPS Journal, June 2011. They are also available on the WPSA web site (www.wpsa.com).

Promotion of WPSA: Promotion of WPSA by Board members was done at several exhibitions (VIV Asia, Victam Europe, VIV Russia) and during many symposia and conferences (Asia Pacific Poultry Conference, Bangladesh Poultry Conference, Sri Lanka Scientific day, Turkey Production Symposium, European Association of Animal Production). This resulted in greater visibility for WPSA, additional members, and in the development of a new contacts with companies who may become sponsors and WPSJ advertisers.

During the coming months, symposia organised by Working Groups of the European Federation will be attended (Incubation, Physiology, Quality of Meat and Eggs, Nutrition). The Latin American Poultry Congress in September is another important meeting that will be attended, especially in light of the fact that the next World Poultry Congress will be held in Salvador, Brazil during 2012.

Proceedings: A new service is making CDs of the proceedings of past WPSA symposia and conferences that will be available upon request. Requests for copies should be directed to the office of the General Secretary. Further details can be found on www.wpsa.com under proceedings.

100 years WPSA: A new logo for the centennial celebration of WPSA was produced. As mentioned in the previous newsletter a historical stamp exhibition will be prepared for WPC 2012. The Belgian based organisation Les Amis de la Mere Poule, is in charge. Secretaries of branches who organised WPCs in the past and who could find philatelic material produced during these events have been contacted in order to get as much material as possible. For further information and the sending of materials that might be considered for this project, please, contact Mrs Maria Spitaels, Les Amis de la Mère Poule, Jan de Trochstraat 118, 1703 Schepdaal, BELGIUM, Maria.spitaels@pandora.be.

In the meantime the Belgian organisation has started a promotional campaign with individual First Day Covers, showing the logo’s of each of the 24 WPCs together with the WPSA logo and the 100 year logo. An example is shown below.

More activities will be reported in future newsletters, as well as in the WPS Journal and on the website.

Report from the Office of the Treasurer

In Memoriam: A. Wade Brant, Treasurer Emeritus of WPSA.
Picture taken during the July, 2011 Poultry Science Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri

I am writing this report in the days following the death of WPSA’s Treasurer emeritus, Dr. A. Wade Brant. To those of you who had the very good fortune to know Dr. Brant, I know this news will leave you with a sense of shock and loss. While Dr. Brant was nearly 92.5 years old, he maintained a youthful spirit. Just a few weeks before his death, he attended the Poultry Science Association (PSA) Meetings in St. Louis, MO. He was the oldest PSA member in attendance. Also at the St. Louis event he participated in all the WPSA-USA Branch activities and patiently educated the new pullets and cockerels on the history of our branch. While he was using a walker and his eyesight was nearly gone, we all felt he would keep on going for many years to come.

For those new WPSA members and the very few long time members who did not know or know of Dr. Brant, he was a member of our Association for 73 years, founding member of the USA Branch and the international Treasurer from 1978 to 1996. His tremendous contributions to the international poultry community and to WPSA were recognized by his induction into the International Poultry Hall of Fame in 1988 and by the awarding of the Macdougall Medal in 1998.

On a personal note, it was Dr. Brant (and WPSA Past President, Dr. A. Wm. Jasper) who were instrumental in my becoming active in WPSA. I followed Dr. Brant as Treasurer of our Association. The office I took over had financial books in perfect order and meticulously maintained historical records. In my experience, few scientific societies have been blessed with a treasurer possessing the financial skills, global contacts, and the international scientific reputation of A. Wade Brant. He never stopped mentoring me and he was my living encyclopaedia of WPSA’s financial history.

Dr. Brant loved everything poultry. Any of you who had the opportunity to visit his home will remember his amazing poultry collection. What was doubly impressive was Dr. Brant’s ability to remember the source of each item. While he might have appreciated that the chicken in question was made out of a rare stone from a far off country, he was most happy recalling that it was “my good friend in the ____Branch, who gave me this chicken when I attended the conference they held in ___.” He was a great poultry scientist and friend. He will be missed by many.

Messages of sympathy may be sent to his family, care of Mrs. Carol Hale, 2236 Bay Horse Lane, Sacramento, California 95835 United States of America.

General Secretary, Roel Mulder
Treasurer,
Francine Bradley

I know the Treasurer emeritus would want me to cut my reminiscing short and talk about the money! I am pleased to report that all but five of our large journal advertisers have paid for 2011. I will soon be sending out second invoices to the advertisers and sponsors who have yet to pay.

In September the Association’s Review of the Books Committee will visit my office. At that time they will go over the 2010 records and financial statement. At the conclusion of their review, they will send a letter with their findings to the President.

Prof. Sally Solomon to Chair the Nominations Committee

The purpose of the Nominations Committee is to put forward the list of candidates for the positions of Secretary General, Treasurer and the 5 Vice-president positions to be voted for at the Council Meeting at each World’s Poultry Congress (WPC). The membership and procedures to be followed by the Committee have been set out in the newly-adopted By-Laws of WPSA (see the WPSA website www.wpsa.com). The Committee is chaired by a WPSA member of high international repute appointed by the Board, and the Board is delighted to report that Prof Sally Solomon has accepted the invitation to act in this role. Sally is noted for her world-leading research on eggshell structure and quality. Other members of the Committee will include the Immediate Past President of WPSA and the Immediate Past Presidents of the European and Asia Pacific Federations. The Committee will also co-opt other members to increase its geographic diversity so that the total membership of the Committee will be at least 15 but not more than 20.

The Committee will request nominations for all the above positions from Branches. They may also receive proposals for candidates for nomination from individual WPSA members, submitted through the Secretary General at least 90 days before the date of the election at the WPC. For the positions of Secretary General and Treasurer, the Committee will only nominate persons considered suitable for these positions in terms of experience and capability. For the Vice-presidential positions, the Committee will draw up a slate of nominations that reflects the world-wide distribution of Branches, with a minimum number of 8 candidates. World's Poultry Science Journal

Online submission of papers for the World's Poultry Science Journal

As Editor of the WPSJ, I am proud to announce that, from March 2010 onwards, all submissions to the journal will be through ScholarOne Manuscripts at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/wpsj or via the WPSA website. Authors must log in and follow the instructions on screen in order to ensure their paper will be processed quickly and efficiently. This system is advantageous in many respects, as it allows quicker processing, easy access to check the progress of each paper, regular automatic reminders for reviewers (to which we are always most grateful for their efforts) and rapid communications with authors. I’m sure some authors will miss the current ‘personal touch’ involved in submitting papers to me, however with ever increasing numbers of papers coming in, and very limited staff capacity, the only way to facilitate processing so many papers is via such a system.
Although most authors are familiar with this kind of submission system, for those who aren’t, please make sure your manuscript strictly adheres to the guidelines given in the instructions. The WPSJ does not charge for publishing papers (except if colour pictures are required), and continues to make every effort to keep the costs of publication to a minimum. However, please be aware that papers which are not reviews or are incorrectly formatted may incur costs that will be charged back to the submitting author (approximately US$20).

The symposium will be held in the Scottish Borders at the Peebles Hydro a few kilometres south of Edinburgh. The aim of the meeting is to present ongoing research activities and provide an update of current knowledge in genetics and poultry breeding for people from universities, research institutions and industry. There will be 5 or 6 sessions consisting of academic and commercial speakers and is designed to emphasise the application and foster interactions between the theory and practice of poultry breeding. In addition one session will be devoted to an update in research on genetic diversity. There will be a poster viewing period and an oral poster presentation session in which the contributor will be given an opportunity to summarize the poster content. The aim of the organising committee is to make the sessions as up-to-date as possible and further details of speakers, topics and sessions will be posted on the web site as soon as they become available.
We look forward to welcoming you to Scotland in October 2011.

On behalf of the organising committee, Steffen Weigend, Chairperson WG3

Dr. Henry van den Brand, Adaptation Physiology Group, Wageningen

Asian Pacific Federation

Waterfowl WG committee: The Asian Pacific Federation Working Group 2 on Waterfowl is in the process of appointing members to its executive committee. Ideally each of our member branches should have a representative on the WG2 committee. In practice however, a committee with membership of six to eight would probably be sufficient. Those branches in countries with significant waterfowl industries should nominate a delegate and send the nomination to the WG2 chairman Dr Jeng-Fang Huang from our Taiwan Branch. His email address is huangjf@mail.edu.tw.

WPC 2012 Salvador, Brazil: Remember WPC 2012 is being held in Salvador, Brazil in early August next year. A strong Asian Pacific presence at the congress would be great. WPC 2012 coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of WPSA and several activities are being planned to celebrate this in both the lead up to WPC and at WPC itself. Keep an eye on the WPSA website for more details.

Just as a matter of interest, the Asian Pacific Federation’s history is quite a bit shorter. It began at a meeting in Singapore in 1981 so will be 31 years in operation at the time of WPC 2012.

Solomon Islands visit: I have recently visited the Solomon Islands where there is interest in creating a new branch of WPSA. This is a small country of approximately 530 000 inhabitants, mostly Melanesian, situated just to the east of Papua New Guinea and north east of Australia.

The Solomon Islands poultry industry is struggling to reassert itself following the ethnic tensions of recent years. Much of the existing industry was destroyed during that time and a general lack of resources has precluded a redevelopment of the industry now that the country is politically and socially quite stable.

An indication of the need for general development in the Solomon Islands can be gauged from the following excerpt from FAO (www.fao.org):

Each year since 1990 the Human Development Report has published the Human Development Index (HDI) which was introduced as an alternative to conventional measures of national development, such as level of income and the rate of economic growth. The HDI represents a push for a broader definition of well-being and provides a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human development: health, education and income. Solomon Islands HDI is 0.494, which gives the country a rank of 123 out of 169 countries with comparable data. The HDI of East Asia and the Pacific as a region increased from 0.391 in 1980 to 0.650 today, placing Solomon Islands below the regional average. The HDI trends tell an important story both at the national and regional level and highlight the very large gaps in well-being and life chances that continue to divide our interconnected world.

This must be a prime concern of the Government of the Solomon Islands. Development of the local poultry industry could well help lift the Solomon Islands HDI.

The market for chicken and eggs in Solomon Islands is currently undersupplied, with much of the product available being imported. Domestic commercial production is minimal. Village production is commonplace, but productivity in this sector is low. There is certainly a need to expand both commercial poultry production and upgrade village production. It would be most beneficial to poultry development in the Solomon Islands for both sectors to continue to exist side by side for the foreseeable future. This co-existence would allow initial commercial development near centres of population, not replacing village production in any way, but complementing it, encouraging productivity improvement and a consequent better supply of high quality protein in the form of eggs and chicken meat to the rural village dwellers.

WPSA Asian Pacific Working Group News

WG3: The WG3 “Ratites” of the APF WPSA contributed to the scientific program of the 44th Congress of the South African Society for Animal Science that was held 11-14 July 2011 at the Stellenbosh University (South Africa). The papers were presented in two sessions: “Exploiting diversity within and across ratite strains” and “Harnessing reproductive technology to exploit additive and non-additive variation in ratites”. The speakers covered aspects of ostrich chick survival, breeder female performance, egg hatchability, molecular and quantitative genetics and the artificial insemination technology.

In summary, it was found that genetic selection for evaporative water loss and eggshell quality should lead to improved hatchability and potentially to better post hatch survival of chicks. An improvement in chick survival is also expected due to genetic variation in the ostrich chick mortality and due to changes in rearing methods namely increased exposure to humans. The ostrich breeding should in the future benefit from crossbreeding that may provide a hybrid vigour, improved reproduction and chick survival if the existing variation in South African Black, Zimbabwean Blue and Kenyan Red breeds is explored. Further, it has been reported that genetic superiority of the breeder female is already demonstrated at 3 years of age. This promises faster genetic gains in egg and chick production, as the generation interval can be reduced in the breeding program. It also appears that reproductive traits are not going to be affected by selection for traits of economic importance such as live weight, egg and chick production.

Studies of the performance of breeder ostriches showed that males maintained without females exhibit little seasonal variation in semen quality and quantity as well as the libido. It has been clearly demonstrated that semen is produced all-year round in the South African environment although ostriches exhibited an increase in measured parameters during spring. On the other hand, the egg laying performance showed clear seasonal variation and the egg production of female ostriches kept without males was poorer than in the pair-mated females. It is clear though that male presence is not essential for ovulation. This female physiology needs to be explored in future studies. A prolonged storage of sperm in the female lasting up to 18 days after the last artificial insemination and production of ostrich chicks from the artificial insemination has been reported lending further support for development of the artificial insemination technology.
The next International Ratite Science Symposium is being decided and will be announced in the coming weeks.

Membership and scientific meetings enquiries should be sent to Dr Irek Malecki (irek.malecki@uwa.edu.au).

Speakers' Bureau: Fostering local and regional conferences in the poultry sciences

During the 34th meeting of the Board of WPSA on August 20, 2000 in Montreal, Canada it was recognised that expertise in several areas of poultry science and production in low income countries is often very limited, and WPSA branches in these countries often do not have sufficient financial resources to fund overseas speakers.
To address this problem, the Board created a Speakers’ Bureau to assist branches in low income countries to cover the travel costs of expert international speakers. This measure is consistent with the key objective of WPSA to encourage and facilitate liaison among research scientists and educators, between those in research and education and those working in the many diverse sectors of the poultry industry. Under the Speakers’ Bureau scheme, WPSA will pay only the cost of air travel (lowest economy class). All other expenses such as local travel and accommodation are to be paid by the organizing Branch(es). WPSA will not pay any honorarium to speakers.
A Branch (or group of Branches) may either identify a speaker to invite or seek the advice of WPSA in the selection of an appropriate speaker.
Given the high cost of international air travel it is important that optimum value be obtained from this expenditure by WPSA. This can be achieved by insisting that the visiting speaker provides more than just one paper at a conference. The visiting speaker could contribute in a variety of ways, e.g., present a second paper on a related topic, conduct a workshop for graduate students, have small group or one-on-one interaction, especially with students, visit industry groups, visit university groups, etc.

Where a Branch or a group of Branches wish to apply for Speakers’ Bureau assistance, there are certain conditions which must be met:

Poultry Production for Better Human Health and a Safer Environment

The success of any event is determined by the degree of active participation. Your participation will greatly contribute to the success of these meetings, and will also add great significance to this important meeting for this part of the world.

There is no doubt that the unprecedented democratic transformation in Egypt and the Middle East will help create new and improved prospects for investment and transactions in poultry science and poultry production and related industries in the middle east, particularly with those European and Euromed partners who will attend the conference, in addition to participants from around the world.

The web site of 3MPS & 6IPC has already been launched, and your abstracts can be submitted online at the following website: http://www.mpn-wpsa.org/egypt.

The organizing committee has spared no effort to ensure the success of these conferences. They should provide an enjoyable and fruitful stay to all participants as well as to any accompanying persons. It would be our pleasure and honour see your name among the conference delegates, and we are looking forward to your positive response. We are willing to answer any and all your questions at any time via the following e-mail address: 3MPS.6IPC@gmail.com.

There is no doubt that the news of the Egyptian revolution has grabbed the public’s attention all over the world. Now almost 7 months post-revolution everyone is concerned and is asking as to whether or not Egypt is safe for travel??!! The answer to this question is twofold: the first is that there are no clear restrictions on travel to Egypt from any other country; the second is that there are increasing numbers of tourists arriving every day at all of the Egyptian airports. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Tourism, the occupancy rate of the five star hotels in the tourist city of Sharm el-Sheikh reached 82% in August 2011.

Occasionally, the media still shows some protests taking place in Tharir square in Cairo. The fact is that daily life in Egypt has returned to normal in almost all aspects of life. Any protests that do take place are mainly at Tharir square (the symbol of the revolution) which is very far from the majority of Egypt’s tourist and other important places. We are seeing increasing numbers of foreigners who are coming daily to visit the upper, east and northern parts of Egypt. On the other hand, these kind of protests are healthy in any democratic country (we see the news from Greece and England for example).

As for the conference, it will be held in the city of Alexandria (230 km away from Cairo) and the conference venue will be in a luxury hotel (105 km away from Alexandria city). For those who would like to avoid coming to the Cairo airport, it's more convenient to come directly to the Alexandria airport by one of these airlines: Turkish, Alaitalia, Etihad, Fly Dubai, Qatar, Egypt, Royal Jordanian or Air Arabia.

Finally, the organizing and scientific committees are sure that with your support and participation we will have a very successful event, and we are looking forward to seeing you in Alexandria next year.

United Kingdom

The UK Branch’s 30th Poultry Science Symposium on Alternative Systems for Poultry – Health Welfare and Productivity that will take place on 9–11 September, 2011, at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. For more details, please see our website at:
http://www.wpsa-uk.com/newSite/meetings/30thPoultryScienceSymposium.html

The annual meeting of the UK branch of the WPSA was held on 4th and 5th April 2011. This annual event is a scientific meeting where current research into poultry is presented by both established and younger members of the academic community. A specific session for industry speakers is included to encourage dialogue between the researchers and industry.
As in previous years the meeting was held in conjunction with BSAS (British Society for Animal Science) and a joint session was included in the programme to bring the two societies together. A new element this year was the inclusion of the AVTRW (Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers) and ASF (Animal Sciences Forum) with support from the BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council). This allows the inclusion of poultry papers from other research organisations to be readily included in the WPSA programme subject to review by the programme committee.
Jubilee Campus at Nottingham University was the venue for the meeting this year and superb facilities were made use of. Three auditoriums in the Exchange Building hosted the plenary and submitted papers sessions with additional rooms accommodating the poster sessions for WPSA and BSAS. On site student halls of residence and the hotel style facilities of the National College also on the campus provided a range of accommodation to meet the needs of all.
Attendance at this year’s meeting was up on previous years at 88 registered delegates and a welcome boost for the hard work put in by the programme committee in organising both the scientific programme and the logistics of the new venue.
The programme provided 19 submitted original oral presentations of 20 to 25 minutes, a selection of 15 short oral poster presentations of 3 minutes each. These were selected from 52 posters that were submitted. The 2 invited industry speakers covered practical nutrition and layer veterinary aspects. As in previous years the joint session organised between WPSA and BSAS covered an area of mutual interest for the respective delegates and 4 speakers delivered papers on the interactions between intestinal microflora and the body in humans, ruminants, pigs and poultry.
Delegates from all associations were invited to attend the Hammond Memorial lecture “Food Security in the 21st Century” delivered by Prof Sir John Beddington, this was followed by the Gordon Memorial Lecture “Commercial Scale Assessment of Poultry Welfare” delivered by Prof Marian Dawkins. After these 2 eminent speakers there was the Gordon Memorial Reception followed by the WPSA Annual Dinner which was held at the National College and catered to a very high standard.
At the dinner appreciation was given for the hard work of the entire programme committee in organising such a hugely successful event was made. The retirement of the associations Treasurer, Dr Kelvin McCracken was also marked and a gift of chickens and goats for a community aid project in Africa was made. We shall miss the help that Kelvin has provided and are grateful for the many years of service. President’s prizes were awarded to Demetra Lund for her paper “Assessing the repeatability of a measurement of vitelline membrane strength in a white egg laying pedigree population.” Also to Laura Dixon for her poster presentation “Using conditioned placed aversion techniques as a novel tool for measuring affective states: broiler breeders find unpredictable wind aversive”.

The meeting will be held at the same venue in 2012 on the 24th/25th April, details for submission of papers and posters as well as registration details will be available on the UK WPSA web site www.wpsa-uk.com.

USA

The USA Branch held its annual membership meeting during the annual meeting of the Poultry Science Association in St. Louis, MO, during July, 2011. Since the Branch is now a part of PSA, two items had been submitted to the PSA Constitution Committee related to the operation of the WPSA Branch for discussion and a vote during the PSA Annual Membership Meeting. Those included a change in Article 10, Section 7, of the PSA Constitution to change the term “councillors” to “representatives” so that the wording would be in agreement with the new WPSA Constitution. The second change proposed in Article 7 was to change the terms of WPSA-USA Committee officer’s from 4 years to 2 years. Both of these changes were approved at the PSA membership meeting on July 18, 2011.

The USA Branch will again be sponsoring Member Travel Grants to the 2012 World’s Poultry Congress that will be held in Salvador Brazil during the summer of 2012. In order to qualify for those travel grants, one must be an active dues paying member of the Branch during 2011, and must submit and abstract and have it accepted for a presentation or poster that will be made at the Congress. Please see the update on the Brazil Congress for the deadline for the submission of your abstract. The Branch will be in contact with the membership as to how to apply for the travel grants.

Inductions into the International Poultry Hall of Fame (IPHF) will take place during the 2012 World’s Poultry Congress. The WPSA-USA branch can nominate up to two individuals for election into the IPHF. The deadline for THOSE nominations is December 31, 2011, so nominations will be solicited from the WPSA-USA membership through the PSA Newsletter with a deadline of October 31, 2011. This will allow time for review of the nominations received prior to the deadline for submission to WPSA.

The Cliff Carpenter Student Essay contest was reviewed by Bob Taylor who has volunteered to Chair this student Contest for a travel Award to the World’s Poultry Congress. Notification of the Carpenter Student Essay Contest will be made through the PSA Newsletter procedure. The topic of the contest this year is “How a poultry science career can make a global difference”. It was moved and approved that the awards be increased from 3 to 4, with at least 2 awards being targeted for Undergraduate students. For each of these $2000 awards, $1000 is provided by WPSA-USA and $1000 from the student’s department. The deadline for submission of application of materials is 1 October 2011. Application details will be forthcoming from the USA Branch.

The USA Branch has submitted a letter to the General Secretary of WPSA indicating that the Branch will be submitting a bid to hold a World’s Poultry Congress in the USA during the year 2020. Volunteers were solicited from the membership, and a Committee, Chaired by Dr. Don Conner of Auburn University, has been put in place to prepare the bid that is due by December 31 of this calendar year.
