In January 1957 he joined the faculty at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where today he is a member of the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences and holds the title, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus. His research and teaching interests are in poultry genetics. He, his colleagues, and graduate students have published extensively on the effects of selection on growth, reproduction, behaviour, and immunocompetence of chickens. A former President of the Poultry Science Association, Animal Behaviour Society, Virginia Academy of Science, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences, he served 10 years as Senior Vice-President of The World’s Poultry Science Association.
