December 2015

Firstly, I would like to express my thanks and congratulations all Board Members, all WPSA Branch representatives, and all supporters, with special recognition to all of our sponsors who made WPSA’s worldwide activities possible during 2015. Our history of stimulating poultry production through research, education and organization are ever more real in the modern world. WPSA has helped promote equal opportunities, mainly in developing countries where poultry production is becoming the most important animal protein source. I am confident that our activities only add to this profile and help further progress in all areas and the challenges faced in maximizing the efficiency of the sector in terms of improving poultry production. I encourage each of you to keep supporting and attending WPSA functions in the future.

Following are conferences in which I recently participated as an invited keynote speaker, to deliver a speech in the opening ceremony, and/or to provide other lectures.

XXIV Latin America Poultry Congress (LAPC) in Ecuador, 2015: Dr. Francine Bradley and I attended the 2015 LAPC held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from September 8-11, 2015. The scientific part of the event was organized in five simultaneous sessions. A quite huge exhibition (around 170 companies) ran alongside with an estimated 3,500 attendees. A breakfast meeting was held with the Latin American (LA) technical poultry associations on Wednesday (September 9th) sponsored by WATT Publishing Company, organized by its Editor Benjamin Ruiz. Further discussion will follow that meeting in an attempt to form a Latin American poultry technical association network of mutual interest to help each other. There is a proposal to work on a LA technical poultry network for the next LAPC with WPSA participation. The Latin American Poultry Association (ALA) booth was used to display WPSA material and as a meeting point. This allowed very good contact with the other Latin American technical poultry associations. The ext LAPC will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico in two years time.

The Potential for Poultry Production in Developing Countries, Antalya, Turkey, from 15-18 October 2015: This Congress in Antalya was well organized with around 200 attendees. Simultaneous translation to English/Russian/Turkish was provided for all presentations. Close to 50 posters were presented. The Russian branch was quite well represented by its President (Prof. Vladimir Fisinin), Secretary (Mrs Tatiana Vasilieva) and many members including Sergey Cherepanov. The Congress Venue was at The Spice Hotel, a five star resort with all-inclusive. It seems that more young professionals and students could be attending the Congress if it was organized in a lower cost venue. I delivered a speech in the opening ceremony, was a keynote speaker in two sessions, and I was a Chair in another one. Prof. Rüveyde does a great job of promoting WPSA in this part of the world. Prof. Servet Yalçin was the chair of the Scientific Committee and she also did a great job.

Local meetings: As the President of WPSA, I have been attending local meetings, chairing sessions and/or delivering speeches. One of these was the ‘XI Mercolab Poultry Seminar’ held in the heart of a Brazilian poultry producing area (Cascavel, PR), from 15-16 September 2015. Close to 400 individuals, 21 sponsors, and international speakers were in attendance. I had the opportunity of chairing this seminar and of making the closing remarks.

Actions in Africa: Invited by the WPSA branch president, Prof. Tona, I will be travelling to Lome, Togo, from December 2-5, 2015 to attend the official launch workshop of the Regional Centre of Poultry Science (Centre d’Excellence Regional sur les Sciences Aviaires - CERSA), a project supported by The World Bank. I will provide the opening address highlighting the importance of the poultry industry in the world, and also participating in a panel discussion with all actual and potential partners as well as those from the poultry industry on the ‘Industry Perspective for the Poultry Centers Needs’.

Final remarks: It has been a privilege and an honour for me, as the President of the WPSA, to participate in meetings, events, exhibitions and other activities, selecting TG applicants, making comments and following BM discussions by email. Although this takes up a great part of my time, it has been very stimulating.

Edir N. Silva, President
